The start of a new school year brings a fresh start for all of the Henry Ford College sports teams. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from each squad during their respective seasons.

Volleyball

Hawks volleyball is back for a second year and is looking to build off last year’s 2-16 record. Six players return from last year’s team, including Torianna Allen-Cook and Cheyenne Lacinski, who both played in all 18 games last season.

First-year player Emily Schroeder said, “it’s good we have a lot to work on but we are making positive progress each day.” When asked about team chemistry, Schroeder also said that the players from last year’s team have helped the new players with conditioning and getting them ready for classes. Head coach Rosemary Motamedi is back for a second year at the helm. The next home game is against Oakland Community College at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at home.

Wrestling

Hawks wrestling is making the leap to a varsity sport after three years as a club sport.

Grant MacKenzie, who founded the Wrestling Club, will coach the team. MacKenzie was named “Coach of the Year” in the Great Lakes Conference in 2014 and 2015. Hawks Wrestling over its three-year life span has enjoyed success with 17 national qualifiers and one All-American.

Westling will have an intrasquad match on Oct. 21, with its first home match on Nov. 12.

Golf

Hawks Golf has started the first half of the season for the 2017-18 school year and has three tournaments left in the fall season. Head Coach Jim Uelman is back for his fifth year. Thus far, the team has 10 top-5 finishes and has been led by sophomore Anthony Balazsi.

The team’s next tournament is at 10 a.m. on Oct. 2 at Lakes of Taylor.

Baseball and Softball

The Hawks baseball and softball teams are eager to start the fall season.

Baseball returns 10 players from last year’s team and captain Gordon Ferguson said, “it won’t take long at all” to get acclimated, he said, “We got a lot more pitching that will help out the pitchers from last year like Tyler Kelley.”

Softball returns with a new head coach.

Steve Brown hopes to bring the HFC softball team back to the top like he did for baseball. Brown served as head coach of the baseball team from 2010 to 2016 and led the squad to a 2015 NJCAA Region XII baseball tournament appearance. Hawks Athletic Director Rochelle Taylor said, “[Brown] accepted the challenge to make softball a force in the conference.”
