Board of Trustees Meeting: Update on Presidential Search

The Henry Ford College Board of Trustees meeting on Sept. 18, 2017 , was short and productive – the Board voted unanimously on all action items one through ten, without much discussion or disagreement. The items included: bids and contracts such as the installation of an LED Message Center Sign, Lecture Capture Audio Visual Systems, and Microsoft Premier Support Services; the appointment of Debra Szymanski to the position of Associate Dean, School of Health and Human Services; approval of new policies to the Board of Trustees, such as Conflict of Interests, Nepotism, and Outside Activities and Motor Vehicle Policy; and a move to approve the recommendation of students listed to receive the Board of Trustees Scholarship.

Following the vote on the action items, Vice Chair Michael Meade spoke at length about the progress made to appoint a new president for HFC. In August 2017, AGB Search – a firm that specializes in executive search for higher education institutions – appointed Dr. Carlos Hernandez to help with the search for a new president. In September 2017, a Presidential Advisory Search Committee (PASC) was approved, consisting of 33 persons; the names of whom are published on the HFC website.

On Sept. 21 and Sept. 22, the college held meetings with students, staff, faculty, and members of the community, during which Dr. Hernandez discusses with attendees what qualities they would like in a president, and for thoughts on the College’s future goals and needs. Dr. Hernandez will compile a profile. Once the profile is completed, the college will put out advertising, then applicants will be interviewed by the PASC. The applicants chosen by the PASC will then be interviewed by the Board of Trustees, who will ultimately make the final decision.
