Halloween at the Historic Redford Theatre!

October is a thrill of a month with chilly weather and spookiness all around! What better way to celebrate the fun-loving fall season than to visit the historic Redford Theatre, one of Detroit’s oldest and finest “atmospheric” movie houses!
“We’re a destination for people who love movies,” said Michael Rizzo, Redford Theatre’s Programming Director, “but we’re still a bit off the beaten path. We’ve got good crowds all year round but they come out in droves for the holiday seasons!”
The Redford Theatre will be showing horror classics, like “Scream” (1996), “The Sixth Sense” (1999), and “An American Werewolf in London” (1981) while also having a family friendly screening of “Casper” (1995)!
“There’s so many different kinds of horror movies,” Rizzo said, “we try to make sure we hit different eras, some that are still a bit family-friendly, some that are more artsy.”
The silent film, “The Unknown” (1927), will even have live organ accompaniment from local musician, Donna Parker, on October 24th! Silent films and live organ is not a common sight these days.
Some other major highlights of the season are a “Vampire Ball” happening on October 3rd before a screening of “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992) where guests are encouraged to come to the show dressed in their vampire-finest!
There is an all day affair happening on October 17th in tribute to Sir Graves Ghastly, Detroit’s legendary television horror movie host. At 2:00pm and 7:00pm respectively, The Fly (1956) and The Fly (1986) will be playing—déjà vu!
Rizzo said “The Fly” (1986) was an awesome, fascinating film while being “one of the grossest things you’ll ever see.”
Excitingly, on Halloween day, “Evil Dead 2” (1987) will be shown on 35mm film!
Rizzo emphasized, “We’re showing [Evil Dead 2] because “The Evil Dead” premiered at the Redford way back in 1981; Sam Raimi is a local!”
Maybe you’re still not convinced why coming out to the historic Redford Theatre is better than hitting up MJR’s Big Screen Rewind?
“They just don’t do it like this anymore.” Rizzo said about Redford Theatre. “We’re a 1,500 seat movie house, there aren’t that many of those.” He reflected, “Watching a movie with a BIG crowd is a totally different experience than watching at home, or even a modern cineplex with the big recliner seats. When you’re packed in tight, you have to watch and react collectively.”
Do you desire to get involved at Redford Theatre? Rizzo encourages students and staff at HFC to volunteer!
“We can only do this because folks volunteer to help,” Rizzo expressed, “and we could always use more hands. It’s a great place to hang out; it could always use help from your readers.”
If you want to spend this Halloween season at the Redford Theatre, they are located at 17360 Lahser Rd. in Detroit, Michigan! You can also learn more about showtimes and volunteer opportunities at https://redfordtheatre.com.
