  • 1976 Caroline Killeen was a former nun who ran on a pro-marijuana platform. She biked across the U.S. several times to raise awareness for several issues, including the environment.
  • 1948 Gracie Allen was a comedian and actress who ran for president as a publicity stunt. She famously said, “Presidents are made, not born. It’s silly to think that Presidents are born, because very few people are 35 years old at birth, and those who are won’t admit it.”

  • 1968 Charlene Mitchell was nominated by the Communist Party and was the first Black woman to run for president. She was a feminist, labor, and civil rights activist. Later, she led efforts to release activist Angela Davis from prison.
  • 1988 Patt Schroeder was the first female U.S. Representative elected from Colorado. When asked how she could be a member of Congress and the mother of young children, she responded, “I have a brain and a uterus and I use both.” While she withdrew from the race for the Democratic nomination for president in 1988, she was strongly considering a run, as evidenced by the Pat Schroeder for President buttons that are now collectibles.
