Winning vs. Top Draft Pick

The Detroit Red Wings started the regular season with a string of problems. One of the team’s top penalty killers, Darren Helm, is on injured reserve. Veteran defenseman Trevor Daley just returned off the injury list last week. The Wings first round draft pick (Filip Zadina) was sent to the minors for development.
Heading into the start of December, the Wings are now 14-14-4. Winning may help the Wings get closer to a playoff berth, but it may also impact their chances for a top draft pick.
The Wings are relying on their young stars, Dylan Larkin, Andreas Athanasiou and Anthony Mantha as well as their solid goaltending from Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Bernier. That goaltending duo might not be around after the trade deadline though. There have been multiple sources that have said there is a possible trade coming for Howard. There are two teams interested, the Penguins and the Blues. That could also mean bringing Matt Murray or Jake Allen in from either team to take Howard’s spot. Matt Murray, a 24- year old goaltender and two time Stanley Cup winner out of Thunder Bay Canada, could bring some more youth to the defensive side of the Red Wings. Even though he had some struggles throughout the start of the season this year, he has stepped up and provided Pittsburgh with a solid starting goalie.
Jake Allen, not as young as Murray but still brings a veteran vibe to the team, is also in consideration. He is not a Stanley Cup winner but has been a consistent threat in the league for some time now.
