Review of Wahlburgers

Just a little over a month ago, the Wahlberg family debuted their restaurant in the heart of Detroit. Greektown, to be exact. Former New Kids on the Block singer Donnie Wahlberg, his brother, actor Mark Wahlberg, and the rest of their family started the family business of Wahlburgers in 2011. Since then they have expanded from only one restaurant in Massachusetts to nine locations total in the United States, along with one in Toronto, Canada.

My friend and I decided to test Wahlburgers out to check off our long list of burger places and to see if it’s really worth the hype. Walking in, I was enveloped with a homey environment. It was almost as if walking into a house with too many tables. The walls had plenty of family portraits and photos of each kid’s accomplishments as an actor, singer, and chef. The lights were dim and a customized video of the Wahlbergs’ restaurant openings as a family was playing. The design of the place itself was pretty vintage and retro, with some funky font all over the menu and even displaying the movie titles Mark Wahlberg starred in on the ceiling.

The menu offered the typical All-American choices of floats, burgers, salads, and sides of fries and tater tots. The servers were perfectly nice, arriving to your table at the right moments, and never hovered around interrupting your meal. I ordered the most favored and famous burger, The Our Burger, and just had to add some avocado spread to enhance the flavor. It had the basic ingredients most burgers have, but added on was Paul Wahlberg’s signature sauce and housemade pickles. I had the meat well-done and it was cooked to a crispy exterior with a juicy and spicy tang in every bite. My side was the thin crispy onion rings, and boy were they thin. I thought they were a little too salty, but they were perfectly crispy and came in a generously large portion size for the low price. The onion rings are not at all like the rings you usually see in restaurants; they were small and were perfect circles. I had some of the mac ‘n cheese without the smoked bacon, and a variety of cheeses melted onto my tongue. This was by far the best mac ‘n cheese I’ve had, though maybe adding more seasoning would improve its taste even more.

This meal along with a soft drink came to a few dollars short of twenty. Wahlburgers definitely made it to the top of my list of favorite burger restaurants for its reasonable prices, comfortable seating, impressive food, and fast service. We are one of the rare lucky states to have this family-owned restaurant and for it to just be about 20 minutes from campus makes it the perfect place to grab a filling lunch.
