Both HFC’s men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted their annual “Hunger Games” event on January 16. The Hawks played division opponent Delta College. All in attendance could bring in non-perishable food items or cash donations to aid the hungry in Wayne County.

The women tipped off first but they couldn’t seem to slow down the Delta Pioneers who happened to come in on a three-game winning streak. With the bounces not going their way, the Hawks came out on the losing end with a final score of 81-57.

In the back-end of the home double-header for the Hawks basketball teams, the men brought in the Pioneers. After a back and forth first half, HFC was down one. Delta pulled away after that and held off the late comeback attempt for the Hawks. Newcomer Jabbar Mims led the way in scoring 22 points for the home team though they ultimately lost with a score of 67-60.

A few days later, both teams hit the road to take on St. Clair County. The men had a tough task since St. Clair was riding a three-game winning streak. It was a high scoring affair but the Hawks came out on the short end with a final score of 93-83. Diangelo Carlton paced the way in scoring for HFC with a 24 point performance. This added to his season average of about 17 points per game. Aside from that, Carlton is almost averaging 10 rebounds per game, both of which lead the team. The loss brought the team’s record to 1-13.

Following the trend for HFC’s opponents, the St. Clair County women’s team was also on a three-game winning streak. This was bad luck for the Hawks who couldn’t put that streak to an end. The final score of the women’s game was 88-59. Though the Henry Ford women started off strong and finished very strong, they were outscored 25-11 and 29-13 in the second and third quarters, respectively which cost them the game. Forward Ariel Walker had another double-double in the game with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The loss dropped the Hawks’ record to 2-14 on the year.

It is a little past the halfway mark of the season for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams so even though they haven’t started off the way they would like, there is still plenty of time to turn things around. The next home game for both teams will be on February 10 against Schoolcraft College, it will be a pink-out game.
