On January 22, a very important protest took place; an event that has annually taken place in Washington D.C. for over 40 years. Hundreds of thousands of people walked the streets of Washington D.C. carrying signs and chanting for the rights of women and children alike. Never heard of that march? Many people haven’t, so you are not alone.

The March for Life was started in 1974 on the anniversary of the decision in the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case which legalized abortion. Every year since on or around the anniversary of the decision, thousands upon thousands of pro-life marchers can be seen in the streets peacefully protesting and advocating for the overturning of the law.

Whether you fall into the category of pro-life or pro-choice is irrelevant when thinking about the great scale of this event. What other annual event that has been going on for 40 years is simply overlooked by the media? There really is none. News stations claim to be impartial, and, even though oftentimes it is hard to say with a straight face that they are, it is inexcusable that a story such as this should be ignored.

Why has this been ignored? Simply put, if more people knew about what was going on then more people could potentially start believing in what the marchers are saying: that life is to be cherished and protected, inside and outside the womb. The numbers have shown a drastic increase and sway in popular opinion on the subject. The Gallup poll below shows the increasing sway toward pro-life, reaching a high of 50% of the nation in 2012.

There is no other reason for journalists to ignore the issue other than fear. They fear that if the news covers the hundreds of thousands of people at the March that people may see the sense of what they are saying and that the public opinion will be even more pro-life. And that is not part of their agenda. They try to maintain the façade of an impartial, everybody is equal, kumbaya attitude and they don’t want to take away the choice the woman has to abort their child.

That is a completely different issue altogether, but without presenting the issue to the public through the mainstream media, are they really giving anyone a choice? If they are truly impartial and encourage equal treatment to all religious, beliefs, and practices, they would have the guts to air the March on television screens around the country. But they don’t.

After 40 years strong of marches on Washington D.C., it doesn't seem like they are slowing down at all. On the contrary, it seems as if they are only just picking up steam. The voice of the voiceless continues to grow louder, and before long it will be a voice that they cannot ignore, no matter how hard they try.
