Henry Ford’s Community Colleges (HFCC) beloved English Professor Kevin P. Trovini, who teaches English and Honors Programs, has been given the opportunity of a lifetime of being the beta tester for the groundbreaking new piece of technology called Google Glass.

Trovini was given the wonderful opportunity through a contest conducted through Twitter, social media website through the Google’s company #ifihadglass campaign. He was to explain his desire for being a beta tester to Google with only being limited to use only 50 words or fewer; although he had very few words to express his desire for being a beta tester his message was strong enough to land him his dream!

He started his journey through the Looking Glass in March of 2013, received his glasses in July and on Thursday, 21 November , Trovini gave a seminar about his unique journey with the state of the art glasses titled, Google Glass. His unique seminar showed the effect the glasses has had on his life and showed the practical uses and purpose for the glasses.
Trovini answered key questions for the audience, 1.) What it is, 2.) How it works? 3.) How’s he using it. Trovini described the high tech device as “A wearable computing device, for brief digital interactions.”

The Google Glasses are of sleek and elegant design. They are small with only one lens , a small display prism and one sided framed which is white and features and also contains a touchpad on the frame which is surprisingly easy to maneuver .
One might think that the times of Jetsons is near and we will now be living life through the eye wear, but Trovini quickly dismisses that fantasy. Trovini explains that Google Glass isn't made to replace items that keeps us connected to the digital world like our smart phone, but it is designed to compliment them.

They are being design to be a way to quickly access the internet and smart phones in a more convenient and comfortable way. For example, you can navigate a busy street without pulling out your phone, and even reading text messages while you're being engaged by a colleague or student in the professor's case.

Just like a smart phone, the Google devices have apps and are internet accessible, so the features are roughly the same but the design and purpose is innovative. You can record your life in a more direct view and capture pictures that would be difficult to do so if you had to hold a phone or a tablet.

The glasses are indeed used to capture moments from a very personal perspective. Trovini entered his first fifty mile marathon, and was able to record his experience through the use of his glasses. He was able to record his honest experience through the glasses, although due to a low battery life he was not able to record the whole experience. Trovini also uses his glasses to take beautiful pictures of his precious family. Trovini makes note of how he has enjoyed the personal usage of his high tech equipment.

Although ambitious and innovative Trovini made note that they are far from perfect. Google Glass is constantly being updated as they get feedback from the beta testers. Trovini had to send in his glasses for a replacement a few months after he possessed the new technology. In December he is expecting an upgraded model of Google Glass.

The seminar was enjoyable and very insightful. Trovini made note that the brand of glasses he is using will not be made for the public, but his experience will help develop a consumer ready device. Trovini’s personal seminar was wonderful. He delivered an honest report and definitely made the audience want a pair of the high tech glasses. So be on the lookout for the new technology when it hits the market, although no set date or price for the consumer ready version has been announced, but if you ask me? It is worth the wait!
