Opinion - Ignorant Attire

We live in a generation where it’s okay to dress to impress and dress to express. Freedom is everything in this country. But how far can we go to mock it? How far can we go until we make ourselves look completely unintelligent? I am talking about people who wear jeans (with fully functioning belts, if I may add) below their behinds.
It is an obvious fact that someone dresses to express themselves and to impress others. People want to show off where they are from, whether it’s the ends of Detroit or Beverly Hills, California. You’re probably saying to yourself, “They dress like that because that is what they grew up around.” Yes, alright, I’ll agree with you on that. But how can they be so ignorant to not see the society sees it as a complete embarrassment and uneducated. I am talking about those who sag their pants below their behind. This is possibly one of the worst and disrespectful ways to dress. You are going out into public and you want everyone to see what type of underwear you are wearing? You want to people to see the imprint of your derrière? What’s the point of your belt if you keep holding them up while you walk?
Last month I was walking past my television and my family had on the American Music Awards. Justin Bieber had just won an award for best Pop Rock Artist. He was wearing a black hat, with a t-shirt, dress coat and jeans that were sagging. You would think he would want to set an image for himself, be respectable, and dress formally for the occasion of being at an awards ceremony on national television in which was attended by the best music artists and producers in America.
If you don’t know, the sagging of the pants all started in prison when male inmates would signify that they would be open to relations with other inmates. I’ve always wanted to approach someone who had their pants sagged and tell them that story and see their reaction. But when I think about it, I rather see the smug look on the face of the more formal and sophisticated people when they witness that in their local park or coffee shop.
Another unfortunate accessory to dress is the big gauges people put in their ear lobes. Most commonly found on someone who is emo or gothic. They want to look cool with hole big enough to throw a dart through it. The ignorance of it all just makes me sick. Have they even thought of their future? They never asked themselves,
“Will this affect me in finding a job or even a career?” They just went ahead and did it to fit in and look cool with their friends who, in addition, smoke marijuana and bang their heads to hardcore screamer rock music. If you found a job with gauges in your ear, good for you. Now try to find a career that will allow that.
Last but not least, skinny jeans. As I’ve been told, skinny jeans are comfortable. But as like everything else, they are not for everyone. Skinny jeans are not a huge concern of mine, but it’s something that should be addressed. I see skinny jeans as gender specific: girls only. Sure guys can get into them, but do people want to see the boney muscles in a guy’s leg? I don’t. The size the major stores consider ‘skinny,’ my calves wouldn’t even fit in those. Popular brands then made skinny jeans for “plus sized” customers. Gouge out my eyes, why don’t you?
Please remember you are displaying yourself to the world when you go outside dressed like you are. Why not dress the best way possible and show that you respect your image?
