Student Council Elections 2016

Student Council is composed of a set number of elected students, and a faculty advisor. This year’s faculty advisor is Dr. Adam Hazlett, English and Religious Studies instructor. The elected Council members serve as a liaison between the student body and the collegeadministration. Student Council holds meetings and listens to student ideas and concerns, and then addresses some of the student comments with the appropriate college personnel in order to usher positive change on campus.
The elections will take place from November 7-11. “We run the Student Council elections around the presidential and congressional elections. This way it reinforces voting in the student body. They can vote Monday here [at HFC] and Tuesday at their neighborhood polling place,” Hazlett explains.
The Mirror News reached out to the six candidates running for the Student Council and asked each of them the same questions about issues on campus that they felt were important, why they were running for student council, why students should vote for them, and what their hobbies and extracurricular activities were. Here is what they had to say:
Christopher Trombley
Position running for - Student Council
Students should vote for me because I have the drive to create opportunities that will impact fellow students. My goal is for everybody to enjoy their experience at HFC, and to make transitions smooth. Whether it is the jump from high school to college, preparing to make the change to a four-year college, or diving into a career. My goal is to ensure that everybody gets an equal opportunity to create bonds and social networks that will last a lifetime.
Sarah El Souki
Position running for - Student Council
If elected, I am committed to effectively represent every single student at HFC. I’ll listen carefully to everyone’s concerns, worries, complaints, and work hard by trying my best to ease them. I’ll do my best to contribute in making the HFC student’s life a better experience! Because of my sense of responsibility and awareness of obligations, I expect of myself to give my colleagues a delightful representation!
Dru Doree
Position running for - Communications Liaison
An issue I would like to address on campus is safety, specifically safety regarding student parking. For all students who drive, please be aware both behind the wheel and while walking to class of reckless driving and do your best to make it safer for all. I enjoy working with others and if we have the same goal of achieving a goal, the results of our work is something that everyone can benefit from.
Marcus Abernathy II
Position running for - President
Seeing as how this is my first year here at HFC, the only problem I can see myself addressing at this point would be better parking. Another issue would be location and direction, for someone who may not know where they are/where a particular building is. I want to be part of something that makes a difference on campus here at Henry Ford College.
Sarah M. Tiba
Position running for - Student Council
I am running for Student Council because I want to serve the students of Henry Ford and bring attention and solutions to issues on campus. I want to bring positive changes to our college. There is nothing I like more than sitting with a good book or writing poetry during my free time. I also enjoy learning about coding and computer programs. I want to serve the students of Henry Ford and bring attention and solutions to issues on campus. I want to bring positive changes to our college.
Byron D. Brooks
Position running for - Public Relations Director
I do not want to see another student experience any of the obstacles I had to go through during my time at Henry Ford College. Also I would like to bridge the gap between all the different cultures and socio-economic groups within the college. I am very passionate about these issues, as I have experienced them first hand. I had to walk 9 miles to get home because the buses were no longer running for the evening.
