Do Golfers Sweat?

This was the question that was jokingly asked by Athletic Director Rochelle Taylor towards the golf team at the student-athlete orientation a couple of days before fall classes had started. It was all in good nature of course, but do they? Do golfers sweat?
Golf may not be recognized by people as much of a “physical” sport compared to the head on collisions of football or hockey. To the naked eye that’s what it might seem like, but really golf takes a great amount of physical ability to become good at. “You still have to be both physically and mentally gifted to play this game,” added third year head golf coach at Henry Ford Jim Uelmen. That’s another thing, golfers have a tremendous amount of mental strength that can really become taxing on you after just a little while. Not to mention the amount of injuries there are in golf from the stress it can put on your body. So golf not having the athletic reputation as much as other sports is certainly unjustified. I have some experience in golf and I can tell you that any dedicated golfer has my respect as much as any other athlete and hopefully has yours as well.
Speaking of those dedicated golfers, the Henry Ford golf team’s season is quickly approaching. Tryouts have been concluded, and practices are well underway. Practices are held at the Lakes of Taylor Golf Course in Taylor, MI. We have high hopes for the team this upcoming season after having sent four members to the regional tournament last season. Coach Uelmen also has high hopes, “I’m looking to take the team or an individual to the national tournament, and also stay competitive within our conference.”
The team is led by returning sophomore, Jake Kieronski, who is looking to capitalize even further from his memorable and extremely successful freshman season. He was named MCCAA Player of the Year, and also named to the All-Conference Team. A big year could be in the making.
The season was scheduled to begin with an invitational hosted by Henry Ford at Dearborn Country Club on September 14, but the event has been rescheduled to September 28. The team’s first event will then be the Kirtland CC Invitational on Friday the 18th at Redwood Golf Course in Roscommon, MI. Good luck to our golf team for the upcoming 2015/16 season.
