Treat Yourself to Early Winter Registration

As your thoughts turn to ghosts and goblins this week, don’t forget to plan your classes at HFC for the winter semester. You will be pleased to find a great selection of classes, at convenient times, if you prepare your schedule now. Below you will find some answers to frequently asked questions.

When does registration begin?

You can register as early as 12:00 a.m., on Monday, October 27, 2014, for winter 2015 classes. You must use WebAdvisor, the web-based tool for registration, grades, schedules, financial aid information, and other helpful resources, to schedule your classes. The Schedule Planner also will be available, allowing you to add breaks and block off time for work, athletics, study, family obligations, and other commitments. Additionally, you may use the Wait List if your desired class is filled. You will be contacted by Hawkmail if a seat becomes available. Make sure you actively check your e-mail account for this function.

What if I don’t have a computer at home?

The Welcome Center will be open at 8:00 a.m. on October 27, and there are a number of computers available for your convenience. Advisers and staff in the Welcome Center will assist you, if you have difficulties. Counselors are also available in the Learning Resources Center, so feel free to contact them to schedule a convenient appointment, at (313) 845-9611.

How do I know what classes to take?

Licensed professional counselors will guide you in class selection, program and graduation requirements, sequencing of classes, transfer opportunities, articulation agreements, MACRAO eligibility, and other helpful information. Additionally, advisers in the Welcome Center are available on a walk-in basis, throughout the week. You can look on WebAdvisor’s Student Menu to review your Program Evaluation, for an overview of your requirements, as well.

A new counseling and advising opportunity will be available for the first time this fall. Counselors and advisers will be available in the Liberal Arts Building Lobby and the Health Careers Building Atrium from Monday, October 27, to Friday, October 31, from 11am to 2 pm, and from 5-7:30 pm. On Saturday, November 1, staff will be present from 9 am-12 pm, in the Liberal Arts Building Lobby. This is a convenient way of accessing general information or clarifying scheduling questions. If you need more in-depth advising or counseling, you should follow-up with a visit to the counselor’s or advisor’s office.

If I don’t register for classes on October 27, will that be a problem?

You may register for classes until they begin on January 12, 2015, or thereafter, if you select 12 week classes. However, your options for classes, times, days, teachers, and on-line possibilities are reduced. The earlier you register, the better opportunity you will have to customize your schedule around your life activities.

I tried to register and was locked out. What do I do?

There are many reasons for this. Check with staff in the Welcome Center, who may refer you to the Cashier’s or Financial Aid Offices for details. Additionally, you may need to schedule an appointment with a counselor, if you are on probation or dismissal. Other obstacles might be a missing transcript or social security number, password problem, or financial obligation to HFC. The sooner you determine the restriction, the better it will be for you, as you will have time to resolve it and still access a desirable schedule.

Best wishes for an interesting and productive educational experience at HFC!
