The Trending #BendGate

The new Apple iPhone was finally released September 19 of this year and demand seemed high. Within the first 48 hours, Apple sold over 10 million iPhones. After the buyers of the new iPhone went home to try their new devices, they started realizing something; the phone bent.
Hours later, the new trending tag on Twitter, Tumblr and other social media sites is the #bendgate or bentgate. Supposedly the new iPhones bend slightly when placed in a pocket with “normal use.”

Apple released a statement to deal with these allegations saying, “Our iPhones are designed, engineered and manufactured to be both beautiful and sturdy. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature a precision engineered unibody enclosure constructed from machining a custom grade of 6000 series anodized aluminum, which is tempered for extra strength. They also feature stainless steel and titanium inserts to reinforce high stress locations and use the strongest glass in the smartphone industry. We chose these high-quality materials and construction very carefully for their strength and durability. We also perform rigorous tests throughout the entire development cycle including 3-point bending, pressure point cycling, sit, torsion, and user studies. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus meet or exceed all of our high quality standards to endure everyday, real life use. With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus. As with any Apple product, if you have questions please contact Apple” (huffingtonpost.com).

Apple is known to stay quiet when allegations about their products rise and in most cases appear to wait until it blows over, so for them to respond relatively quickly seems indeed unusual. From the thousands that complained about their bent iPhones, at the time, only nine filed an actual complaint.
To further debunk #bendgate, T-Mobile CEO said the following in its defense while commenting on videos made against the iPhone, “Listen, what the f**k did you need to see? The video of the guy that's doing this, and if you could have seen his face he probably would have been purple and the veins are coming out of his fingers. And the thing moves a little bit? Are you sh**ting me?" He also said, “It’s not slowing down demand. The demand for these devices in the last few weeks is unbelievable” (businessinsider.com).

It appears that although thousands of users spoke out about their iPhones bending, it may not be a major issue and, other than appearance, it will not affect the iPhone’s capabilities.
