5 Apps that College Students Must Download

With the new semester starting, organization and workloads are on students’ minds. What better way to keep organized than with your mobile device or laptop? Smart phones and devices have been trending for awhile, followed by useful apps that can be helpful for college students.

For any Apple users, a free app called Evernote can make organization easy by allowing students to take and edit notes, photos, create to-do lists, save or sync files, search for texts inside messages, and even record audio notes. This can virtually save anything that students need. Evernote is available for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches, with the latest IOS 7 upgrade.

For any students struggling through learning a foreign language this semester, downloading Duolingo will do wonders. This free app is available for Apple products. Its features include practice skills, levels to pass, levels to play with friends, language phrases, language basics, subject categories, and the option to practice weak skills. According to the iTunes website, Duolingo was Apple’s app of the year in 2013.

When needing to memorize vocabulary terms or ideas, StudyBlue Flashcards make creating flashcards quick and easy. It also includes different study modes such as quizzes and review sheets that apply to your material. Students can even share their study material and flashcards with other students who are taking the same courses. This free app is available on both iPhone and Android devices.

Although these apps are useful, with technology comes social media distractions, which is why Selfcontrol can come in handy. This allows students to block their own access to any websites they find distracting and your mail servers. The urge to check Facebook or play a favorite online game can ruin a study session.

Selfcontrol is available for Mac OS X only. Another useful and app is Dropbox. Instead of students having to always email files and documents to themselves, Dropbox allows you to save any files, photos, and videos, to an account that you can create for free.

Editing and sharing files from students’ own phones is also an option. This can really come in handy when presenting any type of technological presentation, without students having to email files to themselves, but instead can simply log into their Dropbox account. These apps are a must for any college student who owns a smart phone or device!
