HFCC’s Cassandra Fluker Receives Prestigious Honor

Congratulations are in order for Cassandra Fluker, the winner of this year’s Women’s
Recognition Award!

The student activities director and advisor of The Mirror News was given this prestigious honor
at the 40th Annual Women’s Recognition Luncheon on March 22. The event recognizes the
accomplishments of women who are active in their community and have made a powerful impact
on the people at HFCC.

The news came as a shock for Fluker, who was “overwhelmed with emotion” when her name
was called.

“I was very flattered when I found out I was nominated for the award, but I didn’t think I would
actually win,” she said. “This is my tenth anniversary at HFCC and having received the 2013
Women’s Recognition Award is a wonderful tribute for my work and accomplishments. I am
deeply honored to be selected as a recipient.”

This major accomplishment is the icing on top of a well-deserved cake for Fluker. Since
becoming an HFCC faculty member in 2003, she has accomplished plenty. The college’s
extracurricular activities have grown considerably over the course of ten years and there are
now 40 active clubs. Welcome Back Days organized by the Student Center each fall and winter
semester was expanded from two to three days under Fluker’s management.

Though Fluker likes to plan many fun events for students, she also focuses on building
students’ academic potential and leadership skills. She has created a recognition program that
acknowledges student leaders, volunteers, and club advisors. She also assists in the Student
Symposium that supports students in finishing school and pursuing their studies. The program is
now in its eighth year.

“I enjoy working with students, and all of the programming that takes place is for the well-being
and betterment of students,” Fluker says, answering why she likes working at HFCC. “I want
students to graduate from Henry Ford Community College as well-rounded individuals with
skills that contribute to being successful in life.”
