Campus Essentials - New Experiences at Work

For many of us, our responsibilities at work take up every possible second. We work hard from the moment we arrive until the time we leave. That is why when our boss or our organization asks us to work on a special project or join an additional committee there is often the urge to say no and claim to be too busy. While that may be the case, taking on special assignments/responsibilities can have some real benefits. Read the reasons below before saying no to that next request.
Broaden your horizons. Working on special projects often gives you a chance to learn about new areas at work. Use this time to better understand your organization and maybe perhaps, your role within it.
Work with different people. In many cases the extra assignment or committee you are asked to serve on might be composed of people from different departments. You never know when these connections might be useful to you later.
Change people’s perception of you. If you are always saying no to volunteer or extra work responsibilities then your coworkers will begin to view you in a certain light. By participating regularly, or at least on occasion, in additional things you can change that.
Break up the routine. A big complaint some people have about their job is that it is always the same. Adding in a new component can shake things up for you and may even recharge you a bit.
Learn something new. Taking on a new responsibility may afford you the opportunity to acquire and utilize skills/knowledge that your regular responsibilities may not have allowed you to use. These new skills may come in handy when you look for a promotion or a new position.
Have fun! Often new experiences can break you out of your comfort zone. Don’t miss out on a chance to try something new that could prove to be enjoyable.
