In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. HFCC and The University of Michigan–Dearborn are partnering with local agencies to provide volunteer services on January 21, 2013. Students, staff and faculty from both colleges are welcome.
Participating agencies are:
Fish and loaves- Volunteers will be packing food/working in the food pantry.
Vista Maria –Volunteers will be cleaning/ painting at the Vista Maria complex. Outdoor cleaning/pick up may occur depending on the weather.
Franklin Wright Settlements- Volunteers will be doing a variety of cleaning/ painting projects both inside and outside the facility.
Detroit Rescue Mission- Volunteers will be working at one of DRM’s Working Homes, Working Family houses. This program takes old abandoned homes in Detroit and Highland Park and through the help of volunteers refurbish, clean and make ready for a new family.
Alternatives for Girls- Volunteers will be doing a wide variety of task, including cleaning / organizing.
Arts and Scraps – Volunteers will be creating a wide variety of craft project kits for Arts and Scraps.
Kids Against Hunger – Volunteers will package highly nutritious, lifesaving meals for starving children and their families abroad and in the United States.
Care-a-van- Volunteers will be making food kits which will be distributed to the homeless in the Metro Detroit community.
Fleece Blanket Making- Volunteers will be making fleece blankets/gloves and hats, which are donated to the Ruth Ellis Center and the Salvation Army of Southeast Michigan.
Mann Elementary School- Volunteers will be cleaning /painting and organizing at this elementary school.
Ronald McDonald House, Coalition of Temporary Shelter, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Michigan Urban Farming ,and Beyond Basics are a few others participating in the event.

Only basic information is needed such as; name, email, school or organization, and shirt size. Additionally you can choose from a list of the different originations you would like to volunteer with, a brief description of the activities and its location (on or off campus).
Anyone participating in the event will meet at the University of Michigan Dearborn (4901 Evergreen Rd) at 8 a.m. for T-shirts, registration, and breakfast. Everyone will depart for their sites at 8:45 and return to the University at 1 p.m. for lunch and a reflection program.
