Counselor’s Corner - Job Placement

You are happy in your job. You love everything about it and have no desire whatsoever to go anywhere. That is a situation many of us would envy. If that is you the only question left might be, “What do you do to make sure that you stay on top of your game in a job that you love?” How do you stay sharp when all you want to do is what you already are doing? Here are a couple of tips to help.
Develop a long term plan. Maybe you don’t want to change jobs/careers but that doesn’t mean you can’t plan where you want to be 5, 10, or even 20 years down the road. Figuring out how to get there may take you in a new direction you hadn’t considered before. Planning can help you stay motivated and keep striving towards new objectives
Look to expand. Even if you don’t want to change jobs, in today’s economy it is likely that you may have to take on additional responsibilities at some point. Take a look at what new roles you might want to take on in your current job should the need arise. Be ready to volunteer to do them should the opportunity present itself.
Mentor others. If you are happy and content with where you are take the time to help other people get to where they want to be. Having a mentee can allow you to pass on what you know and their enthusiasm and energy may rub off on you.
Get involved beyond your job responsibilities. Most organizations look for their leaders to take an active role in areas beyond their job. Look to serve on a committee or task force. Ask to take part in the efforts of your organization to be more forward thinking.
Just because you like the job you are in does not mean you shut off your brain. Follow these steps to keep growing in a job you love.
