Career Ready - How to Leave A Good Last Impression

In work and in life many people subscribe to the adage, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Additionally, you also need to remember that in a professional environment a last impression is just as important. How you transition out of a job says a great deal about you and can mean the difference between a good reference and a great reference. When you decide to leave a position here are a few tips to make sure you are walking away the right way.
Give notice.
The worst thing that you can possibly do is just stop showing up one day. That leaves your employer in a lurch and they will hold you to blame if things fall through the cracks. Two weeks notice is the minimum but if you already have a job lined up and can give your employer additional time it would most likely be appreciated.
Keep working.
Just because you have given notice doesn’t mean you should coast. Work hard right up through the end of your time at your job. This shows respect for the employer and can help to impress upon them how much you valued your position. This can also be a point your employer can emphasize about you should they be contacted for a reference.
Get organized.
Don’t leave projects unfinished or work undone. Take the time to get all your responsibilities in order and even offer to train a replacement. If that is not feasible consider writing down some instructions for the person taking over for you.
Ask for a reference.
If you’ve followed all the tips above and feel that you are leaving your position on a positive note then it is ok to ask your supervisor or co-workers if they are all right with being a reference for you. In the job world your past does follow you so make sure it is a past that you can be proud of.
