Opinion - Texting in Motion: A Bad Combination

Have you ever texted while walking, running, or how about while biking or driving? Do you know someone who has texted while doing tasks? Look, we all know that we want to stay connected to our friends and family. But should that constant connection really come at such a high price tag? Is your life or the lives of other people worth staying constantly connected?
There has been a frightening growth in accidents involving people texting in motion. Not just car accidents, but people on bikes and people just walking. According to recent news reports, texting leads to more injuries that drunk driving.
Texting and walking is a dangerous thing to do, but when you include things like stairs, busy traffic, or just people in general it becomes downright deadly. Walking while looking down at your phone becomes even more troublesome. If you’re biking and, at the same time, texting, that’s even more dangerous then walking.
But the most dangerous thing is to text while driving. You combine little attention with a preoccupation with texting, tweeting or Facebooking while on the road with several tons of steel, gas, and other drivers—you create a recipe for disaster.
There are a few things you could do to prevent an accident that could seriously damage and/or kill, not just you but others, as well. First, if you’re walking, you could stop, stand by the wall and finish your text.
Secondly, if you are biking, you could pull over and finish the text or tweet. When you are driving, never ever text, tweet or go on Facebook. There will never be a status update that is worth taking your eyes off the road. If someone texts you while you’re driving and you just have to answer it, pull over and answer it. Don’t do it while you are driving. It is just simply not worth it.
Lastly, if you are walking down the stairs, do not text. One slip could be detrimental to your health. Falling down the stairs is the fourth leading cause of broken bones in the United States.
If you feel the need to text, tweet or update your status on Facebook, wait until you are at a secure location. Do not do it while walking, driving, going up or down stairs or riding a bike.
To put it simply, it’s NOT WORTH IT!
