Counselors Corner: Start Halloween Day by Registering for Winter Term

Many of you celebrate Halloween with parties, trick-or-treating with your families or distributing candy to your neighbors. Remember, too, that registration for winter classes at HFCC starts on October 31. Some frequently asked questions and responses will help you in this process.

When does registration begin?

You can register as early as 12:01 a.m. on Monday, October 31, via WebAdvisor, the web-based tool for registration, grades, schedules, financial information and other helpful resources. The new Schedule Planner also will be available, allowing you to add breaks and block off time for work, athletics, study, family obligations and other commitments.

What if I don’t have a computer at home?
The Registration Office, in the lower level of the Learning Resources Center, will be open at 8:00 a.m. on October 31 to assist you. There are a number of computers available and staff will help you access WebAdvisor, if you have difficulties.

How do I know what classes to take?
Licensed professional counselors will guide you in class selection, program and graduation requirements, sequencing of classes, transfer opportunities, articulation agreements, MACRAO eligibility and other helpful resources. Call (313) 845-9611, or stop by the Counseling Office located in the Learning Resources Center, for a convenient appointment before you register for your classes.

Does WebAdvisor show the available winter classes now?

Classes are listed on WebAdvisor, for your preview, before October 31. You may not actually register for them, though, until October 31.

If I don’t register for classes on October 31, will that be a problem?
You may register for classes until they begin, on January 9, 2012. However, your choice of classes, times, days, teachers, campuses and on-line options is reduced. The earlier you register, the better opportunity you will have to customize your schedule around your life activities.

I tried to register and was locked out. What do I do?
There are many reasons for this. Check with staff in Registration, who may refer you to the Cashier’s or Financial Aid Offices for details. Additionally, you may need to schedule an appointment with a counselor, if you are on probation or dismissal. Other obstacles might be a missing transcript or social security number, password problem or a financial obligation to HFCC. The sooner you determine the restriction, the better it will be for you, as you will have time to resolve it and still access a desirable winter schedule.

Best wishes for an interesting and productive winter term at HFCC!
