Review: Gears of War 3

Whoa. Where do I even begin? This game made me cry, it was so beautiful! Well, not really because of that, but I did cry. If you've ever played the other Gears games, then you probably expected this response from the start. So, I suppose we'll just go over the basics here, and then you can pass, go and grab a copy, or just play the one most of you already have.

The game is a third-person shooter, with a plot so deep it blows me away. I refuse to give any spoilers away, even though I'll admit that the main plot itself is a spoiler…so I'll keep it brief. Also, for certain peoples' names (since they are spoilers, as well), we shall use “Bob” and “Phil.”

The game takes place about a year-and-a-half after the second game, and things have gone so downhill that the Cog are all pretty much living on ships for the time being. The adventure begins when Marcus is informed that Bob is back. So Bob gives you a disc which reveals, to everyone's surprise, that Phil is alive and has invented a weapon that will not only wipe out all the Lambent, but the Locusts as well. So, basically the entire game, you are trying to get to Phil to retrieve this beastly weapon. Now let's hurry up and get to what we really care about!

The guns...Oh my gosh, the guns. Out of the several guns to choose from, I have to say that all of them, yes, ALL of them, are different and incredible in their own way. Of course, like most shooter games, you have a long-range, close-range, a gun for accuracy and a gun for dexterity, and your grenades, but what I absolutely love about this game is that, for each of the five types there are numerous substitutes for each one. My personal favorites are the Gnasher shotgun (LOVE shotguns), Lancer, and the magnum revolver. The Lancer is great for long-range, and it's got a chainsaw attached to it...a CHAINSAW! I can't think of anything better than that. While most people try to avoid pistols all together, I recommend the magnum, only because a pistol should be accurate yet powerful, which is what this gun is.

Now if you're a pro gamer and know you can do way better than my guns, the retro-Lancer is definitely the one for you. Yeah, the chainsaw's gone, but hey, you still get a knife! It's more powerful than the new Lancer, but wow, is that recoil awful. Assuming most of you are better with controllers than I am, I trust you can handle that terrible upwards movement that occurs the moment you shoot. If you're new to this game, or any shooting game for that matter, I advise that you to avoid this gun.

Oh, and another favorite new weapon amongst players is the sawed-off shotgun. Its downfalls are that it's got only one bullet before reloading and you must be very close to your enemy…but man, when you shoot that thing, everything on your screen is done for. I still love my Gnasher shotgun, but if I wasn't bad at living in video games, I think I'd be in love.

Now, even though I could talk about this forever, I'm all out of space, so here's a sentence summarizing all I missed: The two new chicks, Anya and Sam, are everything you dreamed they'd be, the multiplayer actually requires some skill this time, and horde/beast mode was greatly improved, giving you perks to add as you make your way through.

Until I see you next…stay golden, gamers!
