HFCC Dancers Prepare for Spring Concert

The HFCC Full Circle Dance Company (FCDC) will hold their 22nd Annual Spring Dance Concert Friday, April 29 at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. in Adray Auditorium. Diane Mancinelli, the company artistic director, promises to showcase one of the best companies and concerts to date.

The 17-member student company will perform a total of eight dances with nearly as many genres, and including three guest choreographers, two student works and faculty pieces. Guests include Jhoanna Arias of Colombia, who is setting a Salsa on the company; Sandee Rodriguez, dance company alumna who choreographed a musical theater piece for the group; and Artist-in-Residence Lisa Montes, who will be teaching Flamenco and setting three traditional Spanish dances on the company.

Amy Guilmette, HFCC’s newest Dance adjunct, has boldly taken on the challenge of working the Alan Cantino, Chief Engineer, Dr. George Popovich, Theater Director, and Justin Alesna, FCDC member, in the Virtual Theatricality Lab. They are working on Motion Capture, which will be part of Guilmette’s piece titled, In Reference to Somewhere Between. Alesna’s Motion Capture image will be projected on a screen on stage while he is simultaneously dancing live, hence creating potential juxtapositions with limitless possibilities in the choreography.

Three works are being created by students. Latoria Harrison is working on a solo and Ira Todman is choreographing for a group. Both compositions came out of an HFCC Choreography class. A third student dance was commissioned by the company artistic director, Diane Mancinelli. Five student company male dancers will choreograph an athletic, strong, jazzy, hip hop for themselves to perform.

Two of the dances will be brought to the American College Dance Festival at the University of Akron in March: Guilmette’s aforementioned modern work, sans the Motion Capture, for an Informal Concert and Mancinelli’s piece, titled Heel Covets, for the Adjudication Concert.

Tickets for the Spring Dance Concert will go on sale in April. For further information, contact Diane Mancinelli at 313-845-6314 or dmancin@hfcc.edu.
