Henry Ford Community College (HFCC) is proud to celebrate Black History Month with an exceptional line up of events and activities beginning Feb. 1, 2011!
This celebration offers a number of films, discussions and music events that recognize and honor African Americans who have made enduring contributions to U.S. society through the years. All events are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!
HFCC invites all of those interested to attend the following events at the main campus, located at 5101 Evergreen Road in Dearborn, MI:
Black History Month Kickoff: In the Tradition—African Jazz Music and Dancers, Tuesday, Feb. 1, 11:30 a.m.
12:30 p.m., Student Center.
Film: Imitation of Life, Wednesday, Feb. 2, 12 – 2:30 p.m., Berry Amphitheater, Andrew A. Mazzara Administrative Services and Conference Center (ASCC)—a struggling young actress with a 6-year-old daughter sets up housekeeping with an African-American widow and her light-skinned 8-year-old daughter, who rejects her mother by trying to pass as a white child.
Film: Rosewood, Tuesday, Feb. 8, 12 – 2:30 p.m., Berry Amphitheater, ASCC—a dramatization of a 1923 horrific racist lynch mob attack on an African-American community.
Film: The Jackie Robinson Story, Wednesday, Feb. 16, 12 – 2:30 p.m., Berry Amphitheater, ASCC—biography of Jackie Robinson, the first African-American major league baseball player in the 20Th century.
Film: The Josephine Baker Story, Tuesday, Feb. 22, 12 – 2:30 p.m., Berry Amphitheater, ASCC—biography of the African-American who became a major performer in the Paris cabarets of the 1920s and 1930s.
Symposium: Sixth Annual Student Symposium—College, The Right Way Wednesday, Feb. 23, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., ASCC. Rosenau Conference Rooms—this promotes the importance of a college education and supports HFCC students as they pursue their academic studies.
