Counselor's Corner

Counseling Division

By definition the literal meaning (of counseling) can be described as “dispensing advice” to others. In most cases, this simplistic definition of counseling helps most recipients of our services understand, in general, the nature of what we provide to them. However, it will be far more nuanced and complicated to define counseling from the standpoint of daily practice.

The main purpose of counseling is to promote healthy, functional, and happy individuals. It is the bridge that connects the science of psychology and humanities with the purpose of creating a healthier, but also a more equal and just, society.

As counselors, we work with students to increase their success in and outside the classroom, enhance their self-esteem, reflect on their pain, but most importantly identify with, and support them through their daily struggles. On a typical day students seek out our services to enroll in classes, discuss future plans, explore careers, share their personal stories, and ask us to help resolve problems that take place in their classrooms or in their lives.

In a nutshell, we wear many hats during our daily practice; we listen, advise, reflect, share laughs, and often console them in their pains.

Our mission in counseling is totally synergized with the whole mission of a community college: an open admission policy which allows everyone a chance in education that will ensure academic success and upward mobility. We in counseling also have an open door policy for referrals to our services from the entire college community. Working together to enhance the intellectual and emotional growth of our students will greatly impact their grades, experiences, happiness, and certainly retention.
