The mission of the Community Service Club is to make a difference at HFCC and in the community. Our members have big hearts. They truly care about others by taking time out of their busy schedules to focus on projects that help people with cancer and children in need. This is our focus for 2010-2011.
October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the club distributed cancer awareness information and took part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Community Service Club and Phi Theta Kappa members walked at Belle Isle in Detroit and Gallup Park in Ann Arbor. Members sold cancer awareness pins and collected approximately $500 for the American Cancer Society.
This event was followed by a bake sale for St. Jude’s Hospital for Children. St. Jude’s provides free care and housing to children and their families as they experience the hardships of cancer treatment. No child is ever turned away due to a family’s inability to pay.
On November 17, the club sponsored our Annual Candlelight Vigil in honor of Homeless Awareness Week. Caring people gathered in the courtyard, forming a circle to share songs, poetry, and personal experiences. After the vigil, participants walked silently in honor of the many homeless people who live on the streets each day.
The Community Service Club supports Covenant House, an agency that helps homeless children by providing food, shelter, education, and counseling. The club has provided support for the last four years by collecting toiletries, warm clothing, and school supplies. The HFCC African American Association is working with the Community Service Club to collect donations and raise awareness.
The Community Service Club is a group that keeps giving. Many club members belong to Team HFCC, a Relay for Life team. The team is sponsoring a bake sale on Wednesday, December 8, from 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the Health Careers atrium. Stop by and purchase inexpensive gifts created by Community Service Club members.
You are encouraged to join the Community Service Club. Stop by our meeting on Wednesday, December 1, at 3:30 p.m. in room C-109, or stop by the Student Activities Office, room C-105, for information.
