The Learning Resource Center

In my time at Henry Ford Community College I have not once taken advantage of the benefits of the Learning Laboratory and all of its educational resources. Sadly, I didn’t know it was there. I am not the only one; many other students are also unaware of the Learning Lab and the assistance it has to offer.

“I never knew that a Learning Lab existed,” says Susana Valles, a criminal justice major at HFCC.

The Learning Lab is something at the college that students should know about and certainly look into. It is conveniently located on campus on the second floor of the Learning Resource Center building. The Lab comes equipped with internet access, computer programs, review sheets, personal instructors, and other support for study help with classes.

Is math not your strong suit? The Math Lab provides students with assistance from basic math to calculus. Math support for the science student is available as well. Preparation for the math placement exam through handouts and chapter review sheets containing practice questions is also accessible.

For those who need to improve reading and writing skills, the Reading and Writing Labs are designed to help. Not only are the Reading and Writing Labs intended for those enrolled in English classes, but also for any HFCC student in need of this support.

In addition, the Learning Lab can be useful for those taking a foreign language, or English as a second language.

Future nurses at HFCC can take the Nursing Entrance Test (NET) right in the Lab. Plenty of examination and review materials are on hand for those preparing for the NET. Reviewing for the NET can be done online in the Lab or from the convenience of your home. Special workshops are sometimes available for nursing students to help them get started in the program, so contact the Lab to learn when these workshops are being given. Support is even offered for anyone having problems with test anxiety.

If you think first-hand instruction might work for you, one-on-one tutoring is available in the areas of math, reading, writing, biology, chemistry, physics, and the languages. Schedules of the tutors do vary so be sure to inquire.

A really great thing about the Learning Lab is that you do not have to be enrolled in any specific courses to gain access to all of materials. All of the resources in the Lab are free of charge for any enrolled student, and instructors will assist as much as time allows.

The Learning Lab hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:40 p.m., and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Lab is conveniently open on weekends, Saturday from 9:40 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Feel free to stop by the Lab in person, or use some of the services that are available online. Visit the website: learnlab.hfcc.edu.

Be sure to learn more about the Learning Lab, and see what assistance is available for your academic success. It’s a resource that HFCC students should take full advantage of…so spread the news!
