Henry Ford Community College offers free “star talks” in the planetarium every Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m., and the current presentations feature information on the fall stars, called “The Road Not Taken.” At the same time, while the shows are narrated by the voice talent of HFCC’s own Susan McGraw, they are actually staffed and presented by members of the Ford Amateur Astronomy Club (FAAC).
The FAAC was established in 1992 as an astronomy club within the Ford Employees Recreational Association of Ford Motor Company, and consists of approximately 170 members.
“FAAC volunteers want to learn how to operate the planetarium equipment and to do the presentations,” said Greg Ozimek, an FAAC member and the club’s webmaster.
In addition to contributing to the star talks at the planetarium, the FAAC generously donates to the HFCC general scholarship fund. Ozimek went on to say, “We support and promote interest in science, engineering, and technology. Astronomy fits in very nicely.”
The FAAC holds their meetings—which are open to anyone who is interested in astronomy—at HFCC every fourth Thursday of the month (excluding November and December) at 5:15 p.m. in the Berry Auditorium located in the Administrative Services and Conference Center.
